Final Count 18 Nov 1962, Sun The Boston Globe (Boston, Massachusetts) Newspapers.comIn the final count, missed here for some unexplained reason, our sextet of masters in the international team tournament at Varna, Bulgaria, finished in fourth place, three points out of second place and 6½ behind the Soviet Union. Major disappointment was Bobby Fischer's mediocre 3-3-5 (even score) on top board. The team as a whole played solidly but not sensationally.
In round 10 of the finals U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. met and thus Botvinnik and Fischer for the first time found themselves face to face over the board. The result was a tension-filled draw in 68 moves. Fischer, black, had the traditional win, but failed to prove it.
