Fischer-Botvinnik 16 Nov 1962, Fri The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) Newspapers.comA report recently came in on the details of the chess game between Bobby Fischer and Mikhail Botvinnik in the Chess Olympic finals, won by the USSR, with the United States coming in fourth.
Fischer always insists that there is no player in the world he can't beat in a match. As a matter of fact, arrogant Bobby said that in a 24-game match, he could spot Botvinnik two points and still win. Well, Bobby did play brilliantly—up to a point. After 21 moves of a fast-moving, bright and clever game, Fischer had a slight piece and positional lead and was expected to win. Again and again, he showed superiority positionally and it became apparent to most observers that he had a winning game. His 51st move, however, was not well calculated and Botvinnik took advantage of this technical error and forced the game into a draw ending. Fischer was over-confident against a thoughtful foe. But he showed, on the basis of this single game, that he would offer a most serious challenge to the current world champion.
