Long awaited, the first competitive encounter between World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik and America's Bobby Fischer took place in the recent Varna Olympics.
Sad to relate, after a long and grueling struggle Bobby built up a winning margin, only to throw it away at his 51st move. Fortunately, it resulted only in a draw and not a defeat. Yet it was undoubtedly a great disappointment to him as well as to his admirers, tempered by the fact that he proved his ability to cope on even or better terms with the champion.
