U.S. Fails To Gain In Chess Olympics
Varna, Bulgaria, Oct. 2—In the fifth-round match between the United States and Rumania in the Chess Olympic finals here last night, one game was drawn and three were adjourned.
On the top board, Bobby Fischer, America's star, adjourned with Victor Ciocoltea after 41 moves of a Sicilian defense. The Rumanian is a pawn ahead with some winning chances, but Fischer's two bishops may hold the game even.
On board two Pal Benko, United States, adjourned with Theodore Ghitescu after 41 moves of a king's fianchetto opening. Benko has the inferior position. On board three, Larry Evans, United States, drew with Florin Ghaorghiu after 30 moves of Benoni defense. On board four, Robert Byrne, United States, adjourned with Corvin Radovici in a King's Indian defense after 41 moves. Byrne is expected to win.
An adjourned fourth-round game was won by Evans against Alfred Benki of Austria without resumption of play.
