Bobby Fischer, 19-year-old Brooklyn genius, lost his first two starts to Pal Benko of New York and Ewfim Geller of the Soviet Union. In an even worse predicament was former world's champion Mikhail Tal of Latvia, who lost his first three games.
One of the losses was to Benko, who is in a four-way tie for first, with a score of 2-1, with Geller, Paul Keres and Tigran Petrosian, all of the Soviet Union.
Tied with scores of 1½-1½ are Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union, and Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia. The tournament, played at the rate of 4 rounds a week, will last until June 27. The winner will earn the right to a match with world's chess champion Mikhail Botvinnik of Moscow.
