Chess Candidates Begin First Round
Willemstad, Curacao, May 3—Two games were drawn and two were adjourned yesterday in first-round results of the Candidates' Chess Tournament here.
Victor Korchnoi and Ewfim Geller, both of the Soviet Union, drew in a King's Indian Defense after 38 moves. Paul Keres of the Soviet Union and Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia drew in a Sicilian Defense after 37 moves.
Pal Benko and Bobby Fischer, both of the United States adjourned a King's Indian Defense after 41 moves. With a pawn plus and with two united, passed, center pawns in a queen and pawn ending, Benko had excellent chances of upsetting Fischer. Tigran Petrosian and Mikhail Tal, both of the Soviet Union, adjourned a Reti Opening after 41 moves.
Petrosian led Tal in a rook and pawn ending by 5 pawns to 4. Because the pawns are all on the same side, Tal had good drawing chances.
Korchnoi netted a rook, bishop and knight for a queen in his game with Geller. But time pressure nullified this advantage, and Korchnoi was forced to give perpetual check to split the point.
Keres attacked right from the start, but Filip resisted and emerged with a slight edge. The final queen and rook ending, however, held no winning prospects for either player.
Second-round pairings tonight follow: Geller vs. Fischer, Filip vs. Benko, Tal vs. Keres, Korchnoi vs. Petrosian. The first players named have the White pieces.
