Willemstad, Curacao (AP) Paul Keres of the Soviet Union moved into a tie for first place in the international candidates chess tournament Monday night by defeating Bobby Fischer of the United States.
The victory, in 73 moves after an earlier adjournment, put Keres back in the lead with fellow Russian contender Tigran Petrosian.
The Keres-Fischer game, only action Monday, left the standings: Petrosian and Keres, both 15½-7½; Ewfim Geller of the Soviet Union, 15-9; Fischer, 12½-11½; Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union 12-12; Pal Benko of the United States, 9½-13½; Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union, 7-14; Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia, 6-18.
Meanwhile, it was announced the Tal, former world champion who has been in hospital since late last week with severe kidney pain, has been withdrawn from the tournament on his doctor's advice.
It had not yet been decided whether Tal's last seven games in the 28-round tournament are to be forfeited thus giving the other seven competitors an extra point, or whether his withdrawal will mean no points added. The result would be the same either way.
