Geller And Keres In Draw In Chess
Willemstad, CuraƧao, June 21—Two games were finished and one adjourned in the Candidates' Chess Tournament tonight. Ewfim Geller and Paul Keres, both of the Soviet Union, drew an uneventful Catalan Opening in fifteen moves.
Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union and Pal Benko of the United States drew a Gruenfeld Defense in forty-two moves. Petrosian extended himself and had a small advantage in a bishop ending. But Benko put up a stout resistance and split the point.
The game between Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union and Bobby Fischer of the United States, a King's Indian Defense, was adjourned after forty-one moves. With even material in a queen, rooks and bishop mid-game, Fischer has a slight pull.
The tournament committee ruled that the games of Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union, who withdrew because of illness, would not be forfeited, but instead canceled. This reduced the number of lost games charged to Tal from fourteen to ten after crediting him with a no-contest in the twenty-second, twenty-third, twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth rounds, when he was supposed to meet Petrosian, Keres, Benko and Fischer. Their scores have been adjusted accordingly.
Last night, Keres and Petrosian drew their twenty-fifth-round game, a Maroczy Sicilian Defense, in fourteen moves. Games between Benko and Korchnoi and between Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia and Geller were adjourned.
