Keres Ties For Lead In Candidates Chess
Willemstad, CuraƧao, June 19—Paul Keres of the Soviet Union moved into a tie for first place in the Candidates' Chess Tournament last night. He won his twenty-first round adjourned game from Bobby Fischer of the United States in seventy-three moves. In a rook and minor piece ending, the superior placement of Keres' men and king was the deciding factor.
As the tournament draws to a close, with four rounds to go, Keres and Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union are tied at 16½ points. The crucial game takes place in the next scheduled round when they meet each other. In addition, in the last three rounds, Keres will meet Ewfim Geller of the Soviet Union, Pal Benko of the United States and Bobby Fischer. In these rounds Petrosian will meet Benko. Fischer and Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia.
Geller can catch up to the leaders, since he will automatically gain a full point on his scheduled turn against Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union who, because of illness, was forced to retire from the tournament.
Fischer, who had been the American hope to win first prize, is now mathematically out of reach of that position.
