The Russians are the top-heavy choice to win the Chess Olympics which began Saturday at Varna, Bulgaria. Thirty-six teams are in quest of the Hamilton-Russell Trophy, emblematic of the world team championship. The Russians have dominated the event in recent years, winning every time since World War II, except two years ago when the United States won.
The American team is composed of Bobby Fischer. Larry Evans, Robert and Donald Byrne and Edmar Mednis. Eliot Hearst will act as non-playing captain, but will become the sixth member of the squad should Pal Benko not participate. In a warm-up match in Warsaw, the Americans scored a close 3-2 victory over the Poles.
