Chess Star 28 Sep 1962, Fri The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) Newspapers.comOur chess star, Bobby Fischer, for so long now the pride of American chess, had a fair year. He did brilliantly in some tournaments, but in the most important tourney of his life (the one in which the winner qualified to meet Mikhail Botvinnik for the world chess championship), Fischer faltered. He got off to a stumbling start, losing three games in rapid succession. He recovered somewhat but never enough, and so ended up way behind the winner, Tigran Petrosian, the Russian Armenian. Future years may see Fischer advance further than he has. But 1962 has been a year of semi-disaster for him.
