U.S. Leads Germans In Chess Olympics
Varna, Bulgaria, Sept. 28—In the first round of the finals of the world team championship of the Chess Olympics, the United States won one game, drew one and adjourned two against East Germany.
On board 1, Bobby Fischer, drew a King's Indian defense with Wolfgang Uhlmann in 18 moves, after an early exchange of queens. Pal Benko, on board 2, defeated Wolfgang Pietzsch in a King's Fianchetto opening when his superior strategy netted a queen-side pawn.
Donald Byrne, on board 3, adjourned a Gruenfeld defense in a favorable position after 41 moves against Burkhard Malich. Edmar Mednis, board 4, adjourned a queen-and-rook ending of a French defense in an unfavorable position in a game with Reinhard Fuchs. The Americans had the white pieces on the even-numbered boards.
