Petrosian Gains In Chess Tourney
Draws With Gligoric, Beats Schweber to Tie for 2d
Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union picked up 1½ points in two adjourned games he played in the world interzonal chess tournament yesterday, according to a report from Sweden. Petrosian thus tied his countryman, Ewfim Geller, for second place.
Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn, who was inactive, remained 2 points ahead of the field with 15-4 total.
Petrosian split a point with Svetozar Gligoric of Yugoslavia after an exchange of queens in a Caro-Kann defense lasting thirty moves.
The Soviet grandmaster earned a full point when Sam Schweber of Argentina, after examining the superior position of his opponent, resigned without resuming play.
Miguel Cuellar of Colombia, Eugenio German of Brazil, Leonid Stein and Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union and Lajos Portisch of Hungary also won games that had been adjourned.
Cuellar won from Abe Yanofsky of Canada in fifty-three moves. German defeated Cuellar after forty-six moves.
Stein engineered a successful attack against the French defense set up by Yanofsky and scored in fifty moves. Korchnoi gained the verdict over Arturo Pomar of Spain, who resigned a Catalan opening without resuming play.
Lajos Portisch defeated Rudolph Teschner of West Germany after forty-eight moves of a Sicilian defense.
Games between Gideon Barcza of Hungary and Julio Bolbochan of Argentina, and between Yanofsky and Fridrik Olafsson of Iceland resulted in draws.
