Geller Takes Lead In Chess In Curaçao
Willemstad, Curaçao, June 6—Three games were finished and one adjourned yesterday in the eighteenth round of the Candidates' Chess Tournament. Ewfim Geller of the Soviet Union defeated Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia in a Sicilian Defense in twenty-two moves, when Dr. Filip blundered and lost a piece. Geller leads with 12 points.
Tigran Petrosian and Paul Keres, both of the Soviet Union, drew a Queen's Indian Defense in twenty-two moves. Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union and Bobby Fischer of the United States drew in a Classical Variation of the Ruy Lopez in twenty-nine moves. Fischer introduced complications by a knight sacrifice, which culminated in a perpetual check.
A Grunfeld Defense going to forty-one moves between Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union and Pal Benko of the United States was adjourned. Benko enjoys a small positional advantage in a rook-and-knight versus a rook-and-bishop ending.
