Chess: Coming From Behind
“U.S. champion Evans has an overall plus score against four of the grand masters who are among the eight competing in the current Candidates' Tournament in Curacao. Against Victor Korchnoi and Paul Keres, both of the Soviet Union, Evans drew the lone game he played with each. In three games with Pal Benko of the United States, Evans won one and drew two. Against Bobby Fischer, the spectacular young American ace, Evans drew the two games they contested.
Mr. Evans, once asked to comment on the difference in attitudes of himself and Mr. Fischer toward the game, replied: “While I play chess to defend myself against the game, Fischer plays it to defend himself against the world.”
