By the time you read this column, the fight for the United States chess championship will reach its climax. The matches began on December 16 and are scheduled to end on January 3. Bobby Fischer and Sammy Reshevsky, both of whom were child geniuses in chess and both of whom already have held the title, are the top names in the tourney. There are nine others in this championship, all good men, and the top three automatically will be seeded into the next interzone final, which eventually will lead to the naming of the challenger for the next match with the world champion.
Reshevsky is 50; Fischer, 19, and the competition between them is keen — and bitter. The others, however, are not easy to beat. They are: Pal Benko, Hans Berliner, Arthur Bisguier, Larry Evans, who is the defending U.S. champ, Nicholas Rossolimo, former French champ and ex-U.S. Open champ, Robert Byrne, Edmar Mednis, James Sherwin and Robert Steinmeyer.
What with the New York newspaper strike and the deadline for this column, the details will have to wait for a later date. Meanwhile, all chess followers await the result with extreme interest.
