With most of his competitors backing away rather than advancing, Arthur B. Bisguier took the lead by a full point after six rounds of the tournament for the U.S. Chess Championship at the Henry Hudson Hotel in New York.
Bisguier, who held the title from 1954 to 1957, won three games and drew three for a score of 4½-1½. He inflicted the first and only loss to date on California champion William Addison.
In addition, Bisguier defeated Nicholas Rossolimo and Edmar Mednis, meeting the latter directly after he had taken the measure of top-rated Bobby Fischer.
Addison is in a tie for second place with Pal Benko and Robert Steinmeyer, each tallying 3½-2½. Addison scored against Samuel Reshevsky and Steinmeyer, and drew against Benko, James Sherwin and Robert Byrne.
Fischer, who at 19 is much the youngest player in the field had 2½-2½, but might advance as a result of an adjourned game with Reshevsky, which which Fischer had two pawns plus.
Nor could Reshevsky be counted out at this stage. He had 2½-1½ and a superior position in an unfinished game with Sherwin. Defending champion Larry Evans, with 2½-2½, also had a game to complete against Mednis.
Five rounds are still to be played to complete the round-robin. Besides the championship title the winner will receive custody of the Lessing J. Rosenwald Trophy. The three leaders will qualify for the next Interzonal Tournament.
