Henry McLemore in his sports-writing days once wrote a story on an international yacht race. Nothing much seemed to be happening, but his account of practically nothing was better than most other accounts of wild activity. Perhaps in our place he could do a good story on the current Lessing J. Rosenwald Tournament for the U.S. Chess Championship (now being held at the Henry Hudson Hotel. New York City) in spite of the fact that the New York newspaper strike has eliminated the normal source of information.
Lacking Mr. McLemore's skill to conjure something out of nothing, we offer this soap operate synopsis of the 1962-63 championship tournament. Will Samuel Reshevsky defeat Bobby Fischer and go on to once more win the U.S. chess crown? Will young Fischer continue his mastery over the other contestants in this event and again emerge undefeated? Or will some dark horse (Larry Evans, Pal Benko, Robert Byrne) surprise the chess world by finishing ahead of both Fischer and Reshevsky? Better yet — just what is going on in this tournament anyway? Stick with us: we will have the story some day.
