Keres Beats Tal In Chess Tourney
Filip Tops Benko—Fischer Behind in Geller Game
Willemstad, Curacao, May 4—Two games were decided, one drawn, and one adjourned yesterday in the second round of the Candidates' Chess Tournament here.
Paul Keres of the Soviet Union, on the black side of a Ruy Lopez, defeated Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union in 41 moves. Tal game up a queen for a rook, knight and two connected passed pawns, but time-shortage complications enabled Keres to win a piece and the game.
Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia defeated Pal Benko of the United States. Benko adopted the Benoni defense. Filip ably exploited Benko's weak pawn formation, quickly winning a pawn and then the exchange, which led to the American's defeat in 28 moves.
Victor Korchnoi and Tigran Petrosian, both of the Soviet Union, drew a Ruy Lopez in 36 moves. Korchnoi, with the white piece, sacrificed a pawn for positional compensation but Petrosian was able to balance the game.
Ewfim Geller of the Soviet Union adjourned with Bobby Fischer of the United States after 41 moves of a Sicilian defense. Geller, with the white pieces, had the upper hand, though the material was even. The Russians connected passed queen and bishop pawns should win Fischer's bishop, leaving the American star with a permanent disadvantage.
Third-round pairings follow: Petrosian vs. Geller, Keres vs. Korchnoi, Benko vs. Tal, Fischer vs. Filip. The first players named have the white pieces.
