Virginia Chess Notes 30 Dec 1962, Sun Daily Press (Newport News, Virginia) Newspapers.comYear-end review. As part of the sendoff for Ol' Man '62 we checked his records on the chess front. In the process we uncovered several surprises during his reign. All in all, chessically it was an interesting year.
First, in early summer, was the battle of Curacao. Mikhail Tal, who entered the lists as a formidable ex-champion of the world, had to drop out for reasons of health. Bobby Fischer, victor of the Stockholm Interzonal and America's teen-age hopeful, failed to meet expectations. Tigran Petrosian, Russia's drawing machine, made enough points to come in ahead of Paul Keres and Ewfim Geller for the privilege of playing Mikhail Botvinnik for the title in '63.

Miscellanies. Space considerations prohibit extended summary of other developments. However, in passing, we could mention “the trouble.” Bobby Fischer wrote an expose for Sports Illustrated, alleging that he was the victim of a drawing conspiracy at Curacao. The article made interesting reading although the proof of such a serious allegation was something else again. At any rate, in a happy sequel at Stockholm, the International Chess Federation moved to revamp future competitions for the world title and apply stricter rules governing drawn games.
