West Germans Bow To U.S. Chess Team
Varna, Bulgaria, Oct. 5— In the seventh round of the Chess Olympic finals here last night, the United States team, playing against West Germany, won two games, drew one and adjourned one.
On the top board, America's ace, Bobby Fischer, playing the black side of a Sicilian defense, defeated Wolfgang Unzicker in 26 moves. A queen side attack propelled by coordinating rooks won for Fischer.
On board 2, Pal Benko, United States, employing an English opening, won from Klaus Darga in 21 moves, sacrificing a queen for rook, knight and passed pawn. On board 3, Larry Evans, United States, complicating an inferior position, drew with Lothar Schmid in 29 moves. On board 4, Donald Byrne, United States adjourned after 43 moves with Dr. Paul Troegger. Byrne has a winning attack.
In adjourned games from the sixth round Fischer lost to Johann Donner of Holland, and Edmar Mednis, United States, won from Haye Kramer of Holland. Thus, the final score of the United States-Holland match were 2½-1½ in favor of the Americans.
