Fischer and Benko Draw At Olympics
Varna, Bulgaria, Oct. 6—The United States team won one game, drew two and adjourned one against Bulgaria in the eighth round of the Chess Olympics finals here last night.
Robert Byrne, on board 4 for the United States, defeated Ljuben Popov in an old Benoni defense. He exploited a spatial advantage to gain a powerful passed queen pawn.
Bobby Fischer, on board 1, drew a Sicilian defense with Nicola Padevsky, while Pal Benko drew a king fianchetto opening against Georgi Tringov.
The United States champion, Larry Evans, adjourned a king's Indian defense with Nicola Minev after 41 moves. At adjournment, Evans was an exchange ahead in a complicated position. The United States had the white men on the even-numbered boards.
In an adjourned game from the seventh round, Donald Byrne of the United States defeated Dr. Paul Troegger of West Germany in 49 moves. Thus the final score of the United States-West Germany match was 3½-½ in favor of the Americans.
