U.S. Wins 1, Loses 2 In Chess Olympics
Varna, Bulgaria, Oct. 1—In the fourth-round match of the finals of the Chess Olympics here last night the United States won on the top board against Austria but lost on the second and third boards. The fourth-board game was adjourned.
On board 1 Bobby Fischer, the American ace, defeated Karl Robatsch. Fischer's fierce kingside attack netted a piece. On board 2, Pal Benko of the United States in a winning position, blundered away a bishop and lost to Andreas Duckstein. On board 3, Donald Byrne, United States, lost to Dr. Franz Gragger, whose strong kingside attack forced the win of a queen for two pieces.
In adjourned games from the third round Fischer drew with Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia and Benko won from Ludek Pachman of Czechoslovakia. The world champion, Mikhail Botvinnik of the Soviet Union, was defeated by Wolfgang Uhlmann of East Germany.
