U.S. Beats Mongolia, 3-0 At Start of Chess Olympics
Varna, Bulgaria, Sept. 17—The United States team, with Bobby Fischer at top board, began the fifteenth Chess Olympics today by defeating Mongolia, 3—0, in the first round of the preliminary qualifications; one game was adjourned.
Fischer, Robert Byrne and Donald Byrne each scored a point, while Edmar Mednis adjourned his game in a complicated position.
The nations vying for the Hamilton-Russell trophy are divided into four groups for preliminary rounds. The top three in each group will later play a round-robin for the final ranking.
Group A consists of East Germany, West Germany, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Norway, Sweden, Turkey and the Soviet Union; Group B consists of Bulgaria, Ecuador, the United States, Indonesia, Israel, Mongolia, Puerto Rico, Rumania, Switzerland and Tunisia; Group C consists of Cyprus, Finland, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Uruguay and Yugoslavia and Group D consists of Albania, Argentina, Austria, Cuba, Denmark, Britain, Hungary, India and Iran.
The Soviet team, with World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik at top board, defeated East Germany, 3—1.
