From our Chess Correspondent
Varna (Bulgaria), September 18
England had another unexpected setback in round three of the world team championship, losing 1½ to 2½ to Cuba. Detailed results were: Penrose ½, Jimenez, Benoni Defense; Clarke ½, Cobo ½ King's Indian Defense; Littlewood 0, Garcia 1, Modern Benoni Defense; Barden ½, Calero ½, Slav Defense.
Penrose always had pressure on his opponent's Queen side, but became short of time and agreed a draw when still in favorable position. The Clarke-Cobo game became bogged down in a blocked position. Littlewood had a fine position in the middle game with active play for his pieces, but handled it weakly and lost first a pawn and then a piece. Barden had a persistent initiative but, like Penrose, became short of time and agreed a draw when still with good chances.
Other Group D results: India 1, Austria 2; Ireland 0, Argentina 2; Iran 1, Albania 2; Denmark 1, Hungary 2. Round two results were: Austria 2½, Cuba 1½; England 1½, Denmark 2½; Argentina 3, India 1; Albania 3, Ireland 1.
Leading scorers are Hungary 9½ and one adjourned; Argentina 8½ and two adjourned; Albania 7½ and one adjourned; Cuba 6½; England 6; Austria and Denmark 5 and one adjourned. Russia beat Turkey 4-0, and the United States leads Bulgaria 2-1. Bobby Fischer was held to a draw by Bulgarian champion Padevsky.
