Uhlmann Is Held To Draw In Chess
Petrosian Splits Point With Leader in Interzonal Play
By drawing with Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union yesterday, Wolfgang Uhlmann of East Germany strengthened his hold on first place in the ninth round of the world interzonal chess tournament at Stockholm, according to a report from the Swedish capital.
The German master, whose score is 7—2, had the white pieces in a Bogoljubow-Indian defense and kept the Russian at bay by cautious play. After eighteen moves they agreed to split the point.
Bobby Fischer, former United States champion, adjourned with Arturo Pomar of Spain but retained second place with 6—1. The Spaniard set up a Sicilian. At the end of the five-hour session, they had an even number of pawns in a bishop-vs-knight ending. Forty moves were recorded.
Pal Benko of New York was paired with Fridrik Olafsson of Iceland in a Catalan opening. The New Yorker drifted into difficulties under time pressure and resigned after twenty-six moves. This setback dropped him to a tie for fourth place at 5½—3½ with Svetozar Gligoric of Yugoslavia.
Arthur B. Bisguier of New York was matched with Gligoric and was outmaneuvered by the Slav in a King's Indian defense lasting thirty-nine moves.
The other victor in yesterday's round was Leonid Stein of the Soviet Union. He defeated Rudolph Teschner of East Germany after winning the exchange in a Sicilian defense that went to forty-two moves.
Julio Bolbochan of Argentina and Victor Korchnoi, Soviet Union, drew a Gruenfeld defense in twenty-six moves, and Mario Bertok, Yugoslavia, and Ewfim Geller, Soviet Union, halved the point in a Ruy Lopez in seventeen moves.
