Local Tourney Opens Tuesday 11 Feb 1962, Sun Sunday Gazette-Mail (Charleston, West Virginia) Newspapers.comThe Interzonal candidates tournament at Stockholm, Sweden, continues. The USA's Bobby Fischer and Czechoslovakia's Dr. Filip were tied for first place with 5 to 1 scores (both were unbeaten). Fischer had a winning position versus Arthur Bisguier in the seventh round at the time of adjournment. The tournament pairings were so arranged that players from the same countries were paired together in the early rounds. The four Soviet representatives were having rather tough going during these early rounds—Petrosian had 3 to 2 and Korchnoi only 3 to 3. But it is entirely too early to count any of these strong players out of the running. Miguel Cuellar of Colombia defeated two strong entries from the USSR, Geller and Korchnoi, in the first two rounds but then lost his next four matches! As it turned out, Samuel Reshevsky could have played in this Stockholm tourney but he declined to compete.
