Filip And Fischer Victors In Chess
Czech Ace Gains Sole Lead—American Ties for 2d
Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia defeated Leonid Stein of the Soviet Union in the fifth round of the world interzonal tournament at Stockholm yesterday, according to a report from the Swedish capital.
With a score of 4½—½, Filip gained sole possession of the lead. Julio Bolbochan played a draw and dropped into a tie a 4-1 for second place with Bobby Fischer of New York.
Filip had the white side of a King's Indian defense. Pressed for time, Stein resigned after thirty-eight moves had been recorded. Fischer conducted the black forces against Istvan Bilek of Hungary and set up a Sicilian defense. It took the former United States titleholder only thirty-five minutes of the five-hour session to force the resignation of the Hungarian after twenty-seven moves.
Cautious play marked the game between Bolbochan and Fridrik Olafsson of Iceland. After twenty moves of an evenly contested King's Indian defense, they agreed to halve the point.
Svetozar Gligoric of Yugoslavia moved into fourth place with a score of 3—2 after outmaneuvering Manuel Aaron of India in a Gruenfeld defense that went to twenty-five moves.
The other victor in the round was Mario Bertok of Yugoslavia. The Slav had the white side of a King's Indian defense and won a piece and the game in thirty-six moves.
