Petrosian Gains Tie For Lead In Chess
Willemstad, CuraƧao, May 25 — Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union tied for the lead in the Candidates' Chess Tournament by defeating Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia in a Queen's Gambit Declined lasting twenty-eight moves.
Ewfim Geller of the Soviet Union drew with Pal Benko of the United States in an uneventful Tarrasch Variation of the French Defense after eighteen moves.
Paul Keres of the Soviet Union adjourned a Closed Sicilian Defense with Bobby Fischer of the United States after forty-one moves. The ending had difficulties for both players.
Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union adjourned a Queen's Gambit, Semi-Tarrasch Variation after forty-one moves against his countryman Mikhail Tal. Korchnoi was a pawn down in a knight versus bishop ending.
With completion of the fourteenth round, the half-way mark of the tournament, the players will leave for St. Martin Island for a five-day, mid-tourney break.
