Petrosian Gains In World Chess
Ties Geller for 2d Place as Eugenio German Bows
Tigran Petrosian, the former Soviet champion, defeated Eugenio German of Brazil yesterday to gain a tie for second place in the world interzonal chess tournament at Stockholm.
Petrosian defeated German in an English opening adjourned from the twenty second round. The victory gave him a score of 14½-6½ and tied him with Ewfim Geller, also of the Soviet Union. Both players trail Bobby Fischer of New York by 2½ points.
Victor Korchnoi, another Soviet player, captured his twenty-second-round match with Sam Schweber of Argentina and is bracketed with Leonid Stein of the Soviet Union and Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia at 13½—7½. Dr. Filip and Arturo Pomar of Spain agreed to split the point in their unfinished twenty-first-round game.
