Keres Takes Lead In Curacao Chess
Willemstad, Curaçao, June 2—Paul Keres, the Estonian grand master of the Soviet Union, took the lead in the fifteenth round of the Curaçao Candidates Chess Tournament by defeating Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia in a Sicilian Defense in twenty-eight moves.
Keres' forceful maneuvering led to a terrific attack forcing his opponent to resign rather than face checkmate or a decisive loss of material.
The three other games of this round were adjourned. Pal Benko of the United States adjourned a Benoni Defense, by transposition, against Bobby Fischer of the United States after forty-one moves. Each player had a bishop and knight and an even number of pawns at adjournment, though the initiative is with Benko.
Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union adjourned a Grunfeld Defense with his countryman Ewfim Geller after forty-one moves. Geller's active deployment of his minor pieces netted a pawn, which appeared to be decisive.
Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union and Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union adjourned a King's Indian Defense after forty-one moves. In a rook, bishop and pawns ending, Petrosian was a pawn minus, with drawing changes, when play was suspended.
