Geller Beats Filip; Ties For Chess Lead
Willemstad, Curacao, May 20—By winning his eleventh round game in the Candidates' Chess Tournament on the black side of an English Opening, Ewfim Geller of the Soviet Union advanced to a tie for first place with his countryman, Victor Korchnoi.
Strong position play against Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia netted a piece for victory in thirty moves.
Two other games were finished and one was adjourned.
Paul Keres of the Soviet Union drew against Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union in a Tartakover Variation of the Queen's Gambit lasting twenty-one moves. The play was correct, but uneventful.
Pal Benko of the United States drew with Korchnoi in an irregular opening lasting forty-one moves. At the end, Korchnoi had an unimportant extra pawn.
The game between Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union and Bobby Fischer of the United States, a Sicilian Defense, was adjourned after forty-two moves. Fischer was behind a pawn in rook-and-bishop versus rook-and-knight ending, but the better position of his king gave him and advantage.
