Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn, 19-year-old former U.S. chess champion, has won the world's interzonal chess tournament in Stockholm. With one round still to go Fischer has a score of 17-4 and is 2½ points ahead of his nearest competitor. Ewfim Geller of the Soviet Union is in second place with 14½ to 6½.
The top six players will qualify for a challengers' tournament which will be played in Curacao, Netherlands West Indies, in May and June. The winner of that tournament will challenge world's champion Mikhail Botvinnik.
If Fischer should be the challenger, he will be the first American contestant in recent history who has battled for the world title.
