Curacaona, Netherland's Antilles (AP) — Bobby Fischer, young Brooklyn chess whiz, made two costly errors in his match with Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union during Friday night's 19th round of the candidates tournament and appears certain to lose to the Russian.
Fischer, playing the white side of the Sicilian defense, had much the better of the match during the early stages. Then he made one error and lost heavily although still strong enough to force a draw.
Just before the 46th move, he made another error and lost more pieces. The match was adjourned then with Korchnoi having a rook and four pawns, the American a rook and a bishop.
In their first meeting here, Fischer won from Korchnoi when the Russian made an error.
“These things have a way of evening out,” said Fischer then.
“I wonder what will happen to me the next time we meet?”
Paul Keres and Ewfim Geller, the two Russians tied for the lead, drew after 22 moves.
