Fischer Clinches Chess Honors At Interzone Tourney in Sweden
He Defeats Bolbochan in 37 Moves and Qualifies at 16-4 for Challengers' Event
Bobby Fischer of New York clinched victory yesterday in the twenty-first round of the world interzonal chess tournament in Stockholm, according to a report from the Swedish capital.
Paired with Julio Bolbochan of Argentina, Fischer conducted the white pieces. With a brilliant attack, he outmaneuvered his opponent in thirty-seven moves and increased his score to 16-4. Fischer qualified for the challengers' tournament, the next step toward the world championship, regardless of the results in the remaining two rounds at Stockholm.
Ewfim Geller and Tigran Petrosian, two of the Soviet players, remained tied for second place at 13½-6½. They were content to maintain their positions with draws.
Petrosian halved the point with Abe Yanofsky of Canada in the shortest game of the tournament—a Caro-Kann defense lasting ten moves. Geller split with Sam Schweber of Argentina in a Nimzo-Indian defense in twenty-four moves.
Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia failed to finish a King's Gambit with Arturo Pomar of Spain at the end of the five-hour session and dropped to a tie at 12½-6½ with Svetozar Gligoric of Yugoslavia. Gligoric drew with Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union after thirty-three moves of a Ruy Lopez.
Gideon Barcza of Hungary gained the verdict over Wolfgang Uhlmann when the East German overstepped the time limit in the Hanham variation of the Philidor defense.
A draw was recorded between Arthur B. Bisguier of New York and Mario Bertok of Yugoslavia in a King's Indian defense lasting thirty-nine moves.
