Bobby Fischer, 19-year-old chess wizard from Brooklyn, is well ahead of the field after 14 completed rounds of the international tournament in Sweden, according to a report from the New York Times.
Fischer, who was U.S. chess champion for four years until he failed to defend his title last December, has won nine games and drawn four for a score of 11-2. His toughest victory was against Abe Yanofsky of Winnipeg, whom he took into camp after 112 moves.
In other games last week Fischer defeated S. Schweber of Argentina, E. German of Brazil and M. Cuellar of Colombia. He drew against Arturo Pomar of Spain and Svetozar Gligoric of Yugoslavia.
In the nine remaining rounds of the tournament Fischer still has to face the four Russian grandmasters. Ewfim Geller, Tigran Petrosian, Victor Korchnoi and Leonid Stein, all of whom moved up in the standing last week.
Wolfgang Uhlmann of East Germany, who had led for several rounds, is in second place with a score of 10-4. He has won eight games, drawn four and lost to Yanofsky and Geller.
In third place is Geller with 9½-3½, followed by Petrosian, 9-4. Petrosian is the only player besides Fischer not to have lost a game outright. In a tie at 8½-4½ are Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia, Gligoric and Korchnoi.
Two of the American group are drifting around the half-way mark. Pal Benko picked up only two points in his last six games for a score of 7½-6½. Arthur Bisguier improved with three points of his last four, but still has a minus tally 6-7.
