Larry Evans, 29-year-old native of New York City, won the United States chess championship with four wins and seven draws for a cumulative total of 7½-3½, according to a report from the New York Times.
Evans had previously held the championship from 1951 to 1954, the youngest titleholder up to that time. His record was broken by Bobby Fischer, who gained the top rung in American chess at the age of 14 four years ago. Fischer did not play to defend the title, offering no explanation.
In the 11th and final round Evans played to a draw with Herbert Seidman, then had to wait for the result of the game between Robert Byrne and Raymond Weinstein. Byrne might have tied for first with a victory, but he finally split the point to finish second with a 7-4 score.
