Crowds, unprecedented outside Russia or Yugoslavia, attended the seventeenth and eighteenth rounds of the interzonal chess tournament at Stockholm, when Bobby Fischer (United States) met two of the strongest Russian challengers, Petrosian and Geller.
Both games stand adjourned, and though the adjournment sessions in general are neglected by the public, this will not be the case when these two games are resumed. Against Petrosian Fischer is a pawn up.
He will certainly do everything in his power to emerge victorious, especially as in the other game he was subjected to grueling pressure throughout by Geller and still has slightly the inferior game in the adjourned position. Here, too, however, a draw is the most likely result.
The week's play was remarkable for the dropping away of Uhlmann (East Germany), who lost to two tail-enders, Teschner and Aaron, incidentally giving the Indian master his first win in a well played game. Korchnoi (USSR), one of the pre-tournament favorites, is also showing signs of distress, losing to Portisch (Hungary) and being in danger of another defeat in his adjourned position against Bisguier (US).
Stein (USSR), Benko (US), and Portisch, on the other hand, have distinctively improved their chances of reaching one of the coveted six places ensuring their participation in the candidates' tournament.
