Paul Keres of the Soviet Union needed to win to tie Petrosian. He essayed the Exchange Variation of the Queen's Gambit in his game with Bobby Fischer of the United States and the game ended in a draw.
The game between Ewfim Geller of the Soviet Union and Pal Benko of the United States, a King's Indian Defense, was adjourned after forty-one moves. Benko is a pawn ahead and has winning chances.
