Chess Tournament Halts At Mid-Point
Willemstad, Curacao, May 26—All adjourned games from the thirteenth and fourteenth rounds of the Candidates' Chess Tournament have been completed.
With the completion of the first half of the schedule, the tournament has been interrupted for a five-day visit by the players to St. Martin Island.
As expected after adjournment, Black won all four games in the thirteenth round. Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union resigned to his countryman Ewfim Geller, and Bobby Fischer of the United States resigned to Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union, in each case without resuming play.
Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia resigned to Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union after fifty-four moves. In a queen-and-pawn ending, a passed rook pawn decided.
Pal Benko of the United States resigned to Paul Keres of the Soviet Union in fifty-six moves when Keres reached a winning king-pawn ending.
Keres and Fischer drew their fourteenth-round adjourned game in seventy-seven moves. Keres' resourceful defense, featuring a stalemate possibility, staved off defeat.
Tal defeated Korchnoi in sixty-two moves in their adjourned game from the fourteenth round. An extra pawn was the deciding factor in a bishop versus knight ending.
