In the early rounds of the world chess Candidates' Tournament in Curacao, the American favorite Bobby Fischer has made a bad start, and the former world champion Mikhail Tal, a disastrous one.
Fischer lost his first two games to Benko and Geller, and Tal his first three to Petrosian, Keres, and Benko.
Fischer had not previously been defeated in a tournament game for 18 months, while Tal led the last Candidates' Tournament most of the way. Now they occupy the bottom places.
While Fischer and Tal have disappointed, Benko has surprised all the forecasters who have written him off as a certainty for finishing last. The scores after four rounds are Benko (United States), Geller, Keres, and Petrosian (all Russia) 2½, Filip (Czechoslovakia) and Korchnoi (Russia) 2, Fischer 1½, Tal ½.
