Willemstad, Curacao, May 9—Three games were completed and one adjourned in the fifth round of the Candidates' Chess Tournament 1962.
Victor Korchnoi of the Soviet Union defeated the United States' Bobby Fischer in thirty-three moves. The Russian, on the black side of a Pirc Defense, sacrificed two minor pieces for a rook and two pawns. After middle game complications, the pieces became equal, but Korchnoi had three extra pawns.
Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union, playing the black side of a King's Indian Defense, won his first game of the tourney when he defeated Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia in thirty-four moves.
Paul Keres of the Soviet Union drew with his countryman, Ewfim Geller, in a King's Indian defense in twenty-seven moves. Mr. Geller's temporary pawn sacrifice yielded an equal rook ending.
Pal Benko of the United States adjourned a King's Indian Reversed Opening with Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union. After forty-one moves, Mr. Benko had a small advantage.
