World Chess Group Acts To Cut Draws
Stockholm, Sept. 7 (UPI) —The International Chess Federation Congress ended yesterday with a decision aimed at preventing grand-master draws in international chess matches.
In the interzonal world chess tournament in Stockholm last winter, and more recently during the Curacao world semi-final it was not unusual for chess masters to agree on a draw after only ten moves.
The Congress has now decided both players may be declared losers if they agree on a draw before thirty moves. However, the main tournament referee may make exceptions.
The congress decision is to be applied at the Chess Olympic, which opens at Varna on Sept. 15.
A congress spokesman refused to say if United States delegates has suggested the new rule. However, informed sources said that Bobby Fischer, leading United States player, who is to take part in the Varna competition, was eager to have the draw decision passed.
