U.S. Reaches Finals In Chess Olympics
Varna, Bulgaria, Sept. 24—The United States team has clinched qualification for the twelve-team finals in the chess olympics.
Last night the Americans won two games, drew one and lost one against Rumania, bringing the team score to 20—4. Bobby Fischer and Donald Byrne won their games in the Rumanian match, Robert Byrne drew and Pal Benko lost, blundering under time pressure.
In two adjourned games from a previous match between the United States and Tunisia Larry Evans and Edmar Mednis of the United States won.
Two other teams to qualify in section B for the finals were Bulgaria, and Rumania, both with scores of 16—6.
