U.S. In 2D Place Tie In Chess Olympics
Varna, Bulgaria, Oct. 7—In the ninth round of the Chess Olympic finals here last night, the United States team, playing against Hungary, won one game drew two and lost one. The United States is now in a tie for second place with Yugoslavia.
Donald Byrne, on board 3, defeated Gedeon Barcza in an English opening in 49 moves when a queen-side onslaught netted him two pawns and an easy ending.
On top board, Bobby Fischer drew a Sicilian defense with Lajos Portisch in 41 moves. On board 2, Robert Byrne drew a king's Indian defense with Istvan Bilek in 30 moves by repetition of moves.
On board 4, Edmar Mednis lost to Karl Honfi in a Sicilian defense in 42 moves when a threat of checkmate gained the Hungarian a piece.
In an adjourned game from the eighth round, the United States champion, Larry Evans, drew with Nicolai Minev in 47 moves. Thus the final score of the United States-Bulgaria match was 2½-1½ in favor of the Americans.
