Young Bobby Fischer, USA, who has his eye on the throne occupied by Mikhail Botvinnik, has claimed that he could spot the world champion two points in a match and give him a drubbing. His only difficulty is that he must first win the Candidates event of the world series in order to get the chance to prove his contention. Perhaps he will make it in the new set-up for the 1965 Candidates. That is if he first qualifies in the Zonal and Interzonal preliminaries. It is a long rough road.
The two had never met until the recent world team championship at Varna, Bulgaria. There was no thought of a quick quiet draw, and Bobby drew first blood. The 51-year-old champion countered with some effective in-fighting. Bobby weakened in the closing stages and finally had to concede the win was beyond him — this time.
