Willemstad, Curacao (AP) Victor Korchnoi of Russia handed Bobby Fischer his third defeat in the 1962 international candidates chess tournament, in a game that left the 19-year-old American just short of tears.
The Soviet grand master Wednesday night forced the 19-year-old Fischer's resignation on the 33rd move in a fifth-round match.
Until this tournament Fischer had been undefeated in international matches for two years.
Former world champion Mikhail Tal of Russia defeated Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia in 34 moves.
Ewfim Geller managed to hold fellow Russian Paul Keres to a draw in 27 moves.
Pal Benko of the United States declined an offer from Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union to end their game in a draw after 41 moves and requested instead that it be adjourned and replayed at a later date.
