Stein Turns Back Gligoric In Chess
Fischer, Stockholm Leader, to Meet Bertok Tonight
With 18-year-old Bobby Fischer of New York leading by 2½ points in the world interzone chess tournament at Stockholm, only one game was played off yesterday, according to a report from the Swedish capital.
The match, adjourned from the eighteenth round after forty moves between Leonid Stein of the Soviet Union and Svetozar Gligoric of Yugoslavia, was won by the Soviet players. Upon resumption Stein won two pawns and forced the resignation of his opponent after ten hours of play. Ninety-seven moves were recorded.
Fischer, who clinched first place Friday night, is scheduled to meet Mario Bertok of Yugoslavia in the twenty-second and semi-final round tonight. His score of 16—4 is made up of twelve games won and eight drawn. He qualified for the candidates' tournament, scheduled for May and June at CuraƧao, Netherlands West Indies. Five others also will qualify.
Two Soviet grandmasters, Ewfim Geller and Tigran Petrosian, 13½—6½ each, hold places below Fischer in the standing at Stockholm. Geller has won nine games, drawn nine and lost two—to Miguel Cuellar of Colombia in the first round and to Arturo Pomar of Spain in the nineteenth.
Petrosian, still undefeated, has won seven games and drawn thirteen.
The candidates' tournament is designed to produce a challenger for the world championship held by Mikhail Botvinnik, Paul Keres of Estonia and Mikhail Tal of the Soviet Union are automatic qualifiers.
