Curacao, June 27. A Soviet chess player, Tigran Petrosian, won the candidates' chess tournament last night and the right to challenge his countryman, Mikhail Botvinnik, for the world title.
Petrosian won as a result of American Bobby Fischer's draw with Pal Keres, also of the Soviet Union, in the 28th round.
Keres, who had been trying to get to a position to challenge for the title for over a quarter of a century, was the only player left who had a chance to overtake Petrosian.
When the American teenager proposed a draw, Keres accepted, leaving Petrosian the tournament winner.
