Willemstad, Curacao (AP) Pal Benko of New York foiled the chance of Russia's Tigran Petrosian to pull ahead of fellow countryman Paul Keres in the 1962 Candidates Chess Tournament.
Benko held Petrosian to a draw after 40 moves after Keres had tied with Ewfim Geller of Russia in 15 moves. Keres and Geller had made a bargain to tie in their four games.
Petrosian and Keres lead the tournament to select a challenger for world champion Mikhail Botvinnik of Russia with 16½ points. Geller follows at 15.
Young Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn remained tied with Victor Korchnoi of Russia for fourth place. His match was adjourned after 41 moves. Each has 12½ points. Benko follows with 9½.
Only the Russian masters have a chance for the tournament title as the event nears its close.
Keres and Petrosian, the favorites, each must play two more games, one with white pieces and one with black. Both must take on Fischer, Petrosian with black and Keres with white. Keres must meet Benko, whom he has beaten seven times, and Petrosian must meet Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia.
